1969 GMC Turn Signal Install

I have gotten great advise before on the removal and install of the turn signal switch here before. Some people have said you have to take all of the electrical pins out of the bottom moon shaped piece to be either able to pull it up through the column or to push the new one in through the top. do you have to remove these pins or can you "fish"( tie a piece of light gauge wire to the old one , pull it up and then use that wire to pull the other moon shaped piece with all the wires attached back down. It seems crazy to have to take it all apart be able to replace that switch. Any help or further advise will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to take it all apart if I don't have to.
