Unhappy firing problem?

Hello- im new to the site, but i was going to see if i could get some advice. I have a 1972 3/4 ton pickup. the motor took a crap on me but i recently got a 79 parts truck with a motor that apparently runs. It had a points distributor in it, and it wouldnt start. i was told it was the coil. But i went ahead and put my hei distributor in, and it still isnt getting fire. so neither of the distributors would do anything, is there anything i could do to test the distributor? or maybe it could be another problem. I would greatly appreciate some advice.
