spark plug extenders/extensions?

I was doing a tune up on my truck over the weekend (first one since I bought it) and for some reason the PO had these screw on extenders on the first 2 spark plugs on the drivers side of my truck. Neither my father or I have ever seen anything of this nature. They just scre2ed on to the end of the spark plug, had a flat end w/ a small hole in it and made the plug about a 1/2 inch longer. Does anybody know what these are for?
