Timing?

I have a '69 C/10 with a 305 V8.
I just put an edelbrock performer intake manifold and carb.
it runs now, but the timing was way off when we put it back together, even though we marked where it was and put it back the same.
we used a timing light to set it and tried 8 to 10, but it still seems to be kinda sputtering and coughing about in the middle of the throttle.
it starts right up, and it doesn't diesel when i kill it.
where do you guys time your trucks?
would it be bad to advance it? would that maybe help the coughing and hesitation?
