Stepnotch alternatives,

Hi guys i am trying to think outside the box here,

I have been thinking of fitting a step notch but i have been thinking of other optrions,

I was thinking of using 4 x 2" box section steel welded to the chassis where the first part of the normal step notch would begin & run the new portion of the chassis straight,

? have i got the wrong idea or has anyone done anything like this,
