What are my axel options?
Here is my delima... I am converting from leaf to trailing arm. I have the rear end that came with the truck. It is a 5 lug from a 71 GMC and have no idea that gears but I know its not a posi. Since I am doing the leaf to T/A conversion I picked up a rear end, just for markup, from a 67 that is a 6 lug with 373 gears. I want to stay with the 5 lug but I'd love to keep the 67 rearend because of the gears and the mounts for the T/A. The only reason Id like to keep the 71 is for the 5 lug.
The 5 lug axels wont work in the 67 because of length...right? So what are my options? Should I just have the 6 lug redrilled for $150 or should I buy the new 5 lug axels for $250? **ADDED My benfit of keeping the 67 is shorter axel... I can run wider rear wheels...T/A perch is already there. The only benefit of the 71 is the 5 lug. I still have to figure out how to mount the T/A perches. I want to do things right the first time. I am doing a frame off and trying to make sure I build a great truck.
