Locating truck through L.plate or vin

Hi yall, I'm new here and I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to find their old truck by tracking it down through the vin or license plate #? In 1992 my dad sold his 1982 two tone C20 pickup..and I've hated him ever since I always thought it would be cool to see if I could find it and buy it back (long shot i know). So I began by diggin through my dads vehicle records and it seems that he threw out all the info he had on this old truck including the vin# He does however remember the license plate # and I was thinking that this could help, but the only way it would is if the truck itself was still tied to that same L. plate# I'm guessin that after 19 years it's not Do yall know of any other ways I could find this truck??
