Steering column clicking noises??

Ok so for the first time about a month ago I started hearing some pretty loud and unusual clicking noises while turning the steering wheel. It sounds like just like morse code on a telegraph. It's coming from somewhere between the firewall and the end of the column thats all I know. Now tonight its back again. Even with the stethescope I can't pinpoint it. It might be electrical or something else Im not sure so I didnt want to post in the electrical section if it's not. Anybody heard these noises? It happens if I touch the wheel or the steering shaft ever so slightly and the faster I turn the wheel, the more frequent they become. The kicker is that both times the truck wasnt running and the key was in the off postion. Please help before I break out the sawzall and get rid of the noises myself
