Spark problems.

Ok, my son was using the 73 last night to take his girl to Prom. About 5 miles from home, on the freeway, it died. All of the accessories continued to work so I figured it wasn't the alternator crapped out and battery drained. When I arrived the engine wasn't overheated, the tank was still full and the oil level was normal. My son claimed it just died and a pretty thick smoke came from under the hood. When I tried to turn it over, it would kinda knock. After trying for a while, it did turn over, but not start. I got it back to the house and checked all fluid levels again - good. I pulled a spark plug wire and have no spark to ground when I turn it over. The coil, distributor and wires are all new. Where should I look to find out if there is power to the distributor? Does it originate at the ign fuse? Thanks for any help.
