Shocking the bouncing. Need suggestions.

I drove my old 68 GMC (leaf springs) out in the country today and drove through some construction and gravel roads and I got tired of the bouncing. I was literally sliding sideways on the corrugated gravel road.

It's not because of defective shocks. They're about 2 years old and I'm almost certain they are Monroe Matics or something similar. They just seem to be too stiff or not responsive enough. My old 69 with coil springs in the rear was certainly smoother but can't remember the shocks I was using.

I'm looking to smooth out some of the bouncing without sacrificing stability. Anyone have any recommendations and/or experience on better shocks?
