Re: Rattle can paint job

You could always do what I'm doing. Buy a quart of Rustoleum Professional gloss black, A small paint tray and 4 inch ultra fine foam rollers, 100% mineral spirits (must be 100%, getting hard to find) Mix it roughly 5 to 1, lay on a thin coat with the roller, let dry 8 hrs, lay on 2nd coat, let dry, wetsand with 400-1000 grit depending on how the paint laid down. The rustoleum is self-leveling to begin with, then the mineral spirits helps it level even better. If you really only want flat black, you could slap another nice smooth coat on and call it done. What I'm doing is a little time consuming, especially on a huge truck like mine. 3rd coat, dry, 4th coat, dry, wetsand again. 5th coat, dry, 6th coat, dry, wetsand and buff with electric polisher and some decent compound. So, six thin coats wetsanded after every second coat, then buffed. You can do a fantastic looking paintjob this way for $50-$100 with no garage, no special equipment or compressor, and Rustoleum paint is made specifically to use on exterior metal. The stuff is tough!

If you're interested try reading up on the moparts forum, or just google rustoleum paintjob. You can practice on a hood or fender first if you want, til you get the hang of it. It's really easier than it sounds, wicked cheap too. Only thing is it's time consuming. I tend to put a coat on then not get back to it for months, but if you stuck to it you could have a small vehicle like a rc/sb done in a weekend.

The pictures of my 82 that are on here somewhere are with 2 coats, not yet wetsanded. The bed was already black, but the doors were multicolored then primed, the fenders were black and red two-tone. Truck looks half-way respectable already, and I've barely started.
