Want to go Auto. What do I need?

I would like to put an automatic in my 83 Scottsdale 4x4 with the Tractor tranny.....I mean 4 speed manual in it.
I know someone who has a transmission and transfer case out of a 79 all rebuilt.
I could tell right away that the shifter on the transfer case was different than mine. It actually had a stick on it rather than the linkage mine has to the selector inside. So, would my transfer case mount to his TH350 tranny? would I need adapters or anything like that or would it basically just bolt right up?
I like the manual transmission but it is seriously the lowest geared vehicle I have ever driven. Its like a tractor...60 mph is about all you want to go in it and it uses gas like its just dumping it on the ground.
