Fuel level float

Since I bought the truck about a month ago, I noticed that the fuel level is not accurate. When I fill it right up, it never gets above 3/4 tank. I was thinking that it could be the float that is cracked and may have fuel in it causing the inacurate reading.

I can get a new float for 10$ or a new sending unit for 35$. Should I just replace the whole unit since I'm going through the trouble of pulling it out, or be cheap and change just the float.

Is it possible that there is another issue causing the off reading?
