Speedo cable w/ cruise...

Hey There.

First post, hopefully of many. I've just gotten my second square-body, a 79 Cheyenne SWB. Goodwrench 350, th400, stock stock stock other than that. Among a few problems is the broken speedo. This truck has cruise (which I don't plan on using), and thus the two separate cables - one from the gauge to the cruse thing on the inner fender, and one from the cruise to the tranny on the driver's side. My question is whether or not I can bypass the cruse all together and use one standard-length cable from the gauge to the tranny. Anyone done this? Thanks.
