Tranny cooler and tranny crossmember ?'s

A buddy is putting a TH400 into a truck with a 283. The radiator is not set up to act as a tranny cooler also. Should he be okay if he just gets an external tranny cooler (passive, without electric fan) or would he be better off getting a new radiator with built in tranny cooler? The radiator he has is in good shape so it doens't need to be replaced.

Second question, he is trying to remove the tranny crossmember from a 1972 pickup and he is having difficulty getting the crossmember out of the frame. Does he need to break all of the rivets to get it out?
