L31 alternator upgrade
For those that want to upgrade from the 105 AMP alternator to either the 124 or 140 AMP model here's the information you need.
The short story is you need to move the water line to the heater core. The new alternator has a different connector and the original belt is too short. This post will help you get what you need. Here is the connector you are dealing with on the original alternator. original connector You need to get either an adapter like this adapter or this pigtail pigtail this pigtail is available at Advance Auto as part number 85854 Dorman Conduct Tite brand. I spliced it into the original harness and left the original connector should I have to go back to it. The 124 AMP and the 140 AMP alternator use the same connector that is different than the connector on the 105 AMP original alternator. You also need to move the hard pipe water line behind the alternator since the new one is too large. Shown here moved heater core line The last thing is change the original belt which is 96.6 inches to one that is 97 inches long. The Dayco belt available at Advance Auto is part number 5060970. Gates also makes a micro V belt 97 inches long. |
