Gas Starvation

1st time ever my 63 left me stranded today. Not getting any fuel. I had a can of starting fluid and sprayed in in the carb, it runs until the ether is gone then stalls. I have yet to pour gas in carb, gonna wait until dusk cause it's too blamed hot! I'm thinking fuel pump or filter. It is full of gas, I use lead additive. It was over 100 degrees and I didn't feel like having another heart attack today, so I called a tow ($70.00). Truck is an in-line 6. How much of a P.I.T.A. is it to remove and replace fuel pump? Could anyone please provide step by step or trouble shooting instructions?
Pete
