Alternator advice

Hey Guys, I've been having alternator problems, sometimes it will charge sometimes it won't. I've checked about everything I know to check. Sometimes I can bang on it and it'll start charging. Sometimes I can unhook the double wire plug in the back of it and plug it back in and it'll start charging. I've unplugged the voltage regulator and plugged it back in. Sometimes that'll do it. Now i'm down to nothing can't get it to charge at all. The alternator thats on it now is one that requires a voltage regulator, Since I'm going to replace the alternator. I want to get one that doesn't require a voltage regulator. Anybody have any advice on what I need to get? What else I'm going to need to bypass the regulator. I think I have a value craft part number 6722 on it now. Thanks for any help you have to offer...
