CST trim attach issues

I wanted to paint my truck white on top, then red on the bottom like many CST's came through. The issue I'm running into is on the chrome trim that goes around the backside of the cab that would separate the two colors. I want to install this trim but....there's always a but....the trim attaches to the cab a little differently. There are metal studs that look like nail heads coming out of the cab maybe 1/4". On those studs, a rectangular piece of plastic with an oval hole in placed, then the chrome trim snaps onto these plastic pieces. My truck does not have these studs coming out of it on the backside of the cab, and frankly, I don't know how they attach to the cab. Either way, I want to install this trim, but it appears I'm F'ed...any advice? Thanks.
