Sloppy Steering Column

I know that some of us on the Board have faced the dilemma of a loose steering column. I reviewed the excellent write-up by Capt. Kaos in regards to repairing the problem. In the event that I choose not to repair the column, what, if any, are the consequences? Will a Sunday drive in the local mountains turn into a hair-raising dive into a bottomless ravine when I lose the ability to steer? Or, will the problem persist without the fear of loss of steering control? Thoughts, anyone?
