Replacement bed side, compatible?

I have a 72 GMC lwb fleetside steel floor bed. The drivers bed side needs to be replaced and I have a friend with a 69 wood floor bed side. From what I have read, only the bed front panel is different from wood to steel. I have to remove it and do some repairs on it as well as pay for it, so I need to know before I fix it all up and sell it for half of what it's worth and start all over again. I'm learning... slowly.
