Re: Frustrated: Talk me out of selling
This is what I have dealt with over the years.
1. Defective starters, sometimes brand new, kills your battery in a week or 2. 2. Poor conections, the wire that goes from the fuse box to the solenoid can get buggered up when putting the starter in, it can't touch the other wires or the block. 3. Stock setup means there is another wire that goes to the coil or ballast resistor, I allways convert my trucks to HEI and eliminate this other wire. Process of elimination, main starter wire is thick and if it looks good, isn't touching the exhaust and is tight at both ends than it's probably fine. Replace the other smaller wires, the originals have been flopping around against hot engine parts for 40 years and we're talking $5 worth of wire and connectors, remember the connection at the starter must be tight and not touching each other. Find a 67-86 sbc starter that you know works, if I wasn't several thousand miles away I would drive there, pull the starter out of my truck and put it in yours, 15 minutes work. If your truck has original wiring get some kind of battery disconnect, they are cheap and prevents your neighbors from telling you that your truck is on fire.
