Fuel pump push rod question...

I got this truck a month ago. Fixed quite a few things, but I had an oil leak I couldn't pinpoint. It's been a while since I had an older vehicle. I wanted to check the block to see what engine it is, the smog pump was in the way, so I removed it(emission exempt in this county). The bracket was connected by 2 bolts on the front of the block by the fuel pump.I drove it 10 miles and blew half the oil out this morning. If I remember.....there is a bolt hole to run a bolt through to hold the fuel pump rod in place while changing the pump. I blocked them off now, I wouldn't have thought one of those smog pump bolts blocked that?????? BTW, the "350" is really a 305.......It'll get a 383 soon anyways.
