Drive Shaft Diameter?

The sub originally had a driveshaft whose diameter was about as big as a soft ball, however picking up a junkyard driveshaft off a 3/4 ton truck to get a pinion that one had a diameter of about a base ball. Sub was a one piece, truck was a 2 piece.

Is there a difference in strength or an advantage of one over the other?
