Question Alternator Wiring ?

Question?
I am replacing my old alt. with an internally regulated one, I know that the stator side needs power when the key is on (I took the ignition hot from the old voltage reg.), but what do I run on the field side. The guy at the parts store said to just run a jumper from the alt. batt. wire, but that don't sound right to me. Thanks
