fuel gauge problem

Hey, my fuel gauge is pretty much useless at the moment. I bought a used rebuilt gauge cluster a while back and a mechanic friend of mine thought that on the back of the original circuit board he saw a resistor that my "new" rebuilt unit did not have. I told him I thought he was nuts, but stranger things have happened in this build! Any advice would be appreciated. The sending unit is grounded and does register but from memory of when it was run last it is pointing down. Waiting on my new tires and wheels and hope to get pics of the finished product soon. Thanks.
