Rear Cab Crossmember

I have a '68 Stepside LWB with a rusted out rear cab crossmember. It's only rusted out on the extreme ends of each side with some rust going through the floor. I don't have access to a garage, so pulling the cab off is going to be just about impossible for me. Can the crossmember be changed without pulling the cab off? -OR- Has anyone ever used the crossmember covers for the ends?

Brothers has them:

I tried looking through past threads and the FAQ, but couldn't find anything about this specific question. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
