Help please!

Hey guys, I'm new around here and really need your help. I have an 84 K20 that we just put a rebuilt 305 in. We put headers on it and they're getting the starter hot after running too the point that it won't crank for about an hour after even a short trip. I know that can probably be fixed with a heat shield, but the big problem I'm having, which doesn't make sense, is that once it gets hot I can get it running with a jump box. But when I get it cranked up, it idles about 2000 rpms and all you can smell is gasoline. The only way to get it running right is to let it sit for a few hours. I'm not sure how they could be related, or if they even are, but I'm out of ideas. It has a rebuilt Q-jet.
