Prepping metal.

I use to work at a body shop as a prepper.One of the body men there was so ocd he would wipe the metal down with wax and grease remover before he would even work on it then again before he welded on it.We never had to worry about fisheyes on any thing that came fom him lol.He said this step was very important on frames and any thing structual.He was the only body man that did it.Do guys do this or is this step is a waste of time?
