Is it my Steering Column?

Hey all! Happy to be here on this great site! Im new here and tried digging to find my main problem but need a quick answer so here I am. Got a 72 chevy pu, just got it running and trying to make it a driver. My question is when i go to shift it into gear (column shift) it goes into gear in the wrong indicator spot on the column at different times each time. Just would like an idea as this is bout to be my daily driver and moneys tight to be buying useless parts. iI seen alot of talk about the linkage bein adjusted, how and where do I start that process? Any help would be appreciated.
