Cliff I have taken many long distance trips on 22's. I have 22's on my wifes Denali that she drives daily. If your concerned about comfort or safety what you need to factor in is sidewall profile.

If your running a super low profile sidewall, it will be firm no matter what the rim size. I see kids in import cars running 25 series tires on 17" and 18" rims. You just know that rides rough, but they feel it looks cool and are willing to ignore the ride.
