Side gas tank using original filler?

I to would like to remove tank from the cab, but I do not want to loose my spare tire. I already have saddle tanks, but do not like the doors to get to the cap. Has anybody used the original fuel filler on the cab and route it to the saddle tank. Do you think this is possible or should I replace the door with something from a newer truck. Pic 1 is my truck with the door I want to get rid of. Pic 2 is a pic I got from the board showing newer door.
