need help diagnosing problem

Not sure if this is the right sub forum but seeing as my 91 crew cab still maintains the later 80s body style Ill start here.

I started the beast normal as any other day when I put it in drive and gave it some gas the engine just died. Then when I try and restart its wont, also the fuel gauge goes nuts, from where it should be reading to over full tank then slams back down to where it should be. also I can hear a faint tick when the gas gauge peaks. Im pretty sure its not the pump as I tried switching tank and nothing happened. Any one have any idea of what it could be? Im not very familiar with the injected later models so I have no clue what it could be. Any help is greatly appreciated!
