Typical Tailgate "tree trunk" dent

Has anyone successfully removed one of those treetrunk style dents from their tailgate? You know the ones - where it looks like someone cut down a 10 inch diameter oak and thought loading it would be too much trouble so they just felled it right over the tailgate into the bed, leaving a huge "smile" of a dent in the top of the tailgate.

I've heard of people trying to squeeze the back into shape with 3-4 iron pipes but that doesn't seem to be a realistic endeavor to my brain.

I could always just do a cut and paste but I'd rather not do that if someone has a trick that is less labor intensive.
