My $10 dollar cup holder
I have the Old Air Products ashtray conversion cupholder in my CST and my C20. I wanted one for my K20 but they are not being made anymore. I bought one of the black slide in cupholders but it blocks my radio and I just don't like it. So I decided to go to my local junkyard and see what was available.
I found the cupholder I needed in a 2003 Nissan Xterra. It is the cupholder for the rear passengers. It mounts in the bottom of the center console. The console was already removed so it was as simple as a couple of screws and releasing some tabs. I then took a piece of scrap aluminum and made a quick faceplate. I used sandpaper to give it a brushed look. I was also able to use the existing holes in the dash where the little rubber ashtray bumpers were located. I cut out the center hole for the cupholder and Voila....a $10 dollar cup holder! $2 entry fee for the junkyard (what's up with that?) $8 for the cupholder assembly $0 for the scrap aluminum I had sitting under my workbench and the two hex head screws I like it and it works good! The best thing is that it required no permanant mods to the ashtray. I can simply remove the faceplate, replace the rubber bumpstops and slide the ashtray back in if I get tired of the thing.... I might make a new nicer faceplate since I cut the center hole a little sloppy on this one....but I might just leave it alone... What do you think?
