Should all water passages on head match the engine block?

There is a very small opening like pencil eraser size on the front and back of my 350 heads that has to be for coolant to pass through. These two locations are non existant on the block. Should all the coolant ports that are on the heads be on the engine block, or are some not there? Does water flow through all the hole in the heads or just a select amoumt? Anyone have a diagram or picture of which one are used and not used if thats the case?
