Speedometer cable

Does the speedometer cable screw into the transfer case on the drivers side just before the rear drive shaft?

The transfer case is a NP205 from a '72 K10.

I have a transmission fluid lead and it appears to be dripping from that cable which has what looks like permatex gooped around it just after the fitting to the trans case.

Does the transfer case have transmission fluid in it?
