4x4 noob needs help!!!

Well, some off road help...

I'm looking at buikding a new truck, prerunner/FDR special and have a couple questions.. Now I have a bunch of old blazer crap that I was going to use, and was wondering what the difference bewteen dana 44 and the stock 10 hubs/spindles are? Should a really try and seek out a 44 set up or can I use the 10 bolt stuff? I'm hoping to be 3000lb running(v8 s10), so it's not a pig by any means.. Also, since I'm not using the spindles are designed can I hack off the outside bit as I don't need the locking part of the hubs? That doesn't support the sindle in anyway right? So just make a new cover for it to keep everything clean..

Anyone?
