Gas tank Sending unit w/3 outlets?

Hi all,
I'm redoing my '85 2wd short bed, and I dropped the tank this weekend. And noticed the sending unit has 3 outlets. I'm assuming the 3 are (vent,return,and fuel) I know the fuel goes to the fuel pump, and the vent goes to the carbon canister next to the radiator, which is busted, but where does the return go?
I have installed a sb400 with mech. fuel pump. I need to order a new sending unit, but wasn't sure which one to order.
I'm wanting to eliminate the canister, but can it be vented somewhere else?
