Talking Help A Newbie!!!

Newbie here, well just new to the Classic truck scene! Anyway, I came across a 1976 Chevy Truck for real cheap. The body is in excellent shape, but the engine is pinging. Thats OK cause I was looking for a project. How can I figure out the actually name of it
(c/k etc...)? What kind of cam have you'll thrown in it that came out with GOOD PERFORMANCE and RELIABILITY ?
(looking for a big lope). It already has HOOKER LT, so what other parts make a good gain hp wise? Looking toward intake manifolds, ignition, carburetors (is this even the right way to go for these classics) THANKS GUYS, HOPEFULLY I'LL BE IN STYLE SOON!!!!
