New guy thoughts

I'm new to this section of the forums. Been in the 67-72 for years but am just now getting over here due to getting started on my 48 gmc. My question is about the 3 inch drop axle you can get. When you swap one of those in, what all is involved, parts wise. Can you just get the axle and go? I'm not finding the answer to this on the sites where I find a drop axle. Lastly, any suggestions on where to pick one up?
