Front Crossmember

I have a 1968 C-10 and want to upgrade to front disc brakes. I have read several suggestions about installing a new crossmember (Saddle) from a 1973 to 1985 to accomplish this. I also have several sources with just upgrade kits.
I'm not sure as to which is the most cost effective way to go....leave the stock saddle and upgrade or to install a later crossmember? It seems to be best to go to a salvage yard and just buy the crossmember because of the hardware.

Thank you,
