Wiring engs

I was wondering were i can get wire ends for rewiring my truck. Im making my own harness and need the female tips that connect to the male end of the fuse box. What was used before by the previous owner were black square plastic pieces but i couldn't figure out how to reuse them.

What are you using if you did your own harness? im trying to avoid the the cheap quick connect standard unprotected terminal type. and all the hard plastic ones i see have preset wires in them so i would have to crimp them together somewhere else down the line.

Also how does one go about testing the alternator? i drove my truck around for about 10 minutes and when i got back home, and tried to start it again the battery didnt have enough juice to turn the starter over.
