Many years ago in the days of raised white letters and before Armorall, I used sand and water to clean my sidewalls. Yep, good old mud would make them look like new. I grabbed a handfull of sand and mixed water to create a paste. I rubbed that on the white letters till they were spotless, then scrubbed the sidewalls. Rinse with water, and your tires look like new again..
