1999 C-1500 Suburban Coolant System Question

Brand new water pump installed less than 6 months ago.

When driving vehicle water in reservior rises to the hot line and above slightly. Happens when running heat or AC. No difference. After car sits and cools water level returns to normal down to the cold line. Just started doing this yesterday.

How do I know if it's the water pump or the thermostat?
Would like to fix the right problem the first time. LOL

Thank you
Eric
