I think My tranny broke down?

Yesterday I left my house to go to work and my truck made a loud pop and would no longer drive. It will not move when I put it in any gear. This tranny is old and I knew it would happen sooner or later. Today A guy at a transmission shop told me that it might be my rear end. He said that if the drive shaft spins when I push it , it would be the Tranny. And If I push it and it doesn't spin then it's the rear end. Has any on ever heard of this or what? Any help would be appreciated! Jon
