Can I use steel floor bed sides on wood floor bed

I have two real nice steel floor bed sides for 72 chevy and I was wondering if they would be compatible with a wood floor bed. Is the difference of the extra 3/4" of wood versus the steel floor made up with the bed side or is the cross sill height shorter to accommodate the difference? Mar-k lists different part numbers for steel and wood cross sills. On a side note I just bought a 72 bed that was made into a trailer and it has the wood floor unfortunately what I was hoping would be a home run for the rest of the parts I need to compliment these nice bedsides I have has turned into a complete waste of money due to forty years of new England winter road maintenance
