Backup Lights Problem w/Column Shift

So I noticed the other day my backup lights were not coming on when I shift to reverse. I changed the fuse out, no luck there. After some playing around I found I can get them to come on if I move the shift lever around on the column while it's in reverse, but cannot really get them to stay on unless its moved to just the right position and held there. On top of this I have little to no mechanical skills or knowledge which doesn't really help. So does this mean it's time for a column rebuild or is there something else I should be looking at? Any ideas are appreciated, thanks everyone!
