hood latch question

Hi! I've installed my hood latch on my 59 Apache, I can push the hood down past the safety catch(the first hook), but a little reluctant to push down on it in fear I may not get it back open. How does the nub/catch on the right lower part of the latch work? If I pull the lever as to open the hood, the safety catch pulls in, then I can squeeze the right lower part back in, but I don't see how the hood can down all the way cause of the right lower part of the latch! It's a new latch.
