I've always timed my Chevy V8's by advancing them until they either A) start to detonate (ping) and/or B) are hard to start when hot. Sure, I could set 'em to what the book says, but every engine is different. I've had some that would let me get away with 14 degrees and others that wouldn't take more than 10. Either way, I'll be a gen-u-wine dollar bill that's the problem.
